MA Material Futures - Central Saint Martins, 2023

Emma Lawrence is an English artist/designer inspired by materials and craftsmanship to create objects and sculptural furniture. Spending her early career working in an ironworks factory, Lawrence was surrounded by traditional crafts that unleashed her playful curiosity. Her introduction to design through welding and forging has encouraged a fascination with form and materiality.

Lawrence went on to study sculpture at the University of Leeds. Her restless urge to experiment revealed the importance of process and play in her work. It was here that she began to marry new technologies with traditional arts. She creates tactile surfaces that encourage the viewer to address their relationship with objects around them.

Lawrence is a forward-thinking designer/maker and her place in the MA Material Futures course at Central Saint Martins has provided the space to address the environmental implications of her practice. She is motivated by materials that inspire, promote and support the transition towards a more sustainable future. Through surfaces and form she uses design to encourage people to reflect on industries that are heavily reliant on overconsumption. Lawrence emphasises the value and beauty of her chosen materials to create minimalist objects that remain timeless.

"I would like my work to act as a movement that reflects and questions the world around us. Through making simple, timeless pieces I would like the materials to act as not just an object but a feeling, selling honest products that tell the truth."
